Turtles are one of the oldest reptile groups, even older than snakes, crocodiles, and alligators. The oldest turtle fossils date back to the time of the dinosaurs, over 200 million years ago.

For many turtles, the sex of the hatchling is determined by the temperature of the environment during egg incubation. Warmer temperatures tend to produce females, while cooler temperatures produce males.
